Now in its third year, this one-day conference provides a broad introduction to the indigenous community. The conference will focus on traditions, daily life, and recommendations for how best to work with and serve Ventura County's community of 20,000 indigenous immigrant residents. We expect approximately 200 representatives from area agencies, schools, clinics and hospitals, and public offices to join us for this day-long conference.
We will feature workshops by indigenous leaders and experts on:
New immigration reform under President Obama and how it will affect farm workers
Traditional indigenous medicine and healing
Men and women’s mental health in the indigenous community
How to effectively partner with an interpreter
Bringing indigenous knowledge into the school classroom
The indigenous community and the law
The conference will feature art exhibits of local artisans and attendees will share together in a traditional indigenous lunch.
This event is presented by CBDIO (Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño) and MICOP (Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project).
